Christian Wijnants Resort 15

Longtime member of the OTHER/family, Christian Wijnants has been injecting our shelves with bursts of vibrant colour and perfect silhouettes since day one.

We were lucky enough to catch up with the Belgian designer to find out about his highly sought after Resort 15 collection and the lookbook shot by one of our favourite photographers, Harley Weir.

- The collection is based on the Moken and Bajau tribes of Asia, what is that attracted you to these cultures and how have you used this inspiration in the collection.

I am always fascinated by people that are living in very traditional ways and in harmony with the nature.

Many things inspired me in the so called “Sea gypsies” cultures: the mix of cultures, the life with the sea, the anatomy changes adapting to their lifestyle,…

I have seen very interesting movies about them where you can see how small children learn how to fish and dive.

- The lookbook was shot by Harley Weir, we’re huge fans of her work, how did this partnership come to be and what was the shoot like?

I am also a big fan of her work and wanted to collaborate with her. Thanks to stylist Lotta Volkova I came in contact with her and we decided to shoot at the British Sea side. It was a lovely sunny day and l was very excited to work with her.

I love her work as it is poetic and powerful in the same time.

- Print is featured heavily in this collection, can you tell us where this came from? Does the print tell a story in itself?

We did all the prints ourselves with paper collage. It was  a lot of fun to do. The idea was to create patchwork using old papers teared apart.

The prints were divided in categories: exotic flowers, stripes and big patchwork inspired by images of recycled materials.

- What’s your favourite plant?

At the moment my favorite plant is a banana plant. I have 3 at home and one big one in the office.
